The Long awaited new CD by Dominic Collins (or 'im from Ancoats') will be released in the Summer 05 on the “I’ve Never Heard Of Him” label. The new material on this CD is rumoured to be the best this songwriter has written since his last CD. Tracks will include:

  • We Were Thrown Outside Every New Years Eve
(Me and our kid on the step with bread and coal)
  • A Pensioners Love Song
(A tribute to me mam and dad)
  • A Girl Called Chips
(A sad story about my first girlfriend)
  • You Can Spend Your Cash On Urban Splash But It’s Still Ancoats To Me
(The rejuvenation of my beloved Ancoats)
  • Can You Lend Me A Tenner Please Dad
(The only time my son talks to me)
  • Please Please Please Buy My CD
(Because a certain postman wants to retire)
  • The Night Bob Dylan Died In Stockport
(A very funny but true incident)

Home Gigs - A Massive Success!
top of page

What a brilliant month April has been. I have played home gigs to packed houses, two people sat on a couch, care homes, and even a funeral!

After a fantastic full page article in the local Advertiser newspaper, the first one was on St Paddy's night at Amy's home in Droylsden. Amy turned out to be an artist who lived in a terraced house, when I arrived (Early) around 7-15 pm there was only 2 people there but Amy told me that the rest will be along soon because she had told them 7-00 pm but it was St Paddy's night and beer could be playing a large part in the fact that there was no one there yet. Then the doorbell started to ring and the people started to flow into a very cosy living room. I was introduced every time someone else came into the room (that was funny) then we agreed that I should play 6-7 songs, have a break for some food then kick off again.

It was a young crowd, and I played to an audience whose combined age I thought wouldn't match mine! To be honest I think that the nostalgic stuff that I do didn't hit home, and one guy took exception to my song 'The Crusty Cob', starting off a debate about the stuff that they put into pies. I told him to get himself down to the crusty and they will make him better (but he didn’t get it).
Still, I was very well received, and with a radical change in the second half, I had to dig in deep and it went down a storm.

Home Gig Number Two was to help celebrate a lady’s 80th Birthday (Mary) Mary and her husband arrived in a stretch limo to there daughters semi detached home once again In Droylsden, The party kicked off around 5-00 pm and I arrived as planed at 7-00 pm. A single chair was put in the middle of the living room for me and the night started with an acoustic version of Happy Birthday (Nice touch eh!!!) This time I was playing to 3 different generations of people, and while the younger end tended to listen but from the kitchen, this gig was about making Mary’s night as special as I could. In total contrast to my first home gig my nostalgic songs were made to measure for this one, the memories came flooding back and after every song there was a debate about where we lived in ancoats or what pubs did I used to go in on Oldham Road, and of course everyone there knew the Crusty cob. I then played my diet song for the women, the Middlewich song for everybody to join in the chorus, my 'lend me a tenner' song for the younger generation. This was a totally different night from gig number one and this is what this whole adventure is all about; contrasting and enjoyable experiences.

My fellow acoustica songwriters and I had an online debate a few weeks ago about what this songwriting lark all about, this brought up the subject of monotony and why are we doing this for little or no reward. Well this idea (thanks Darren & Phil) could very well hold the answer; it's challenging, confidence building, it will give you a chance to have a good workout playing songs you have just written or have not played for years, and its very rewarding.

I was on a real high after these two gig’s. I was told at the end of this evening that Mary’s husband has Alzheimers and they had not seen him smile like that for a long long time; they were looking at him and watching his face light up with the memories.

The Home Gigs continue! This offer has not yet ended so if you want a home gig just call. I have also extended this through to office gigs where I will come into your office and play you a free gig while you are eating your butties. How good is that then?
