3 Mar Kristyna and the TrueTones + Ste Draper £4
Kristyna and
the TrueTones are a 9 piece jazz and r&b extravaganza playing original
material written by Kristyna as well as covers which they change to make
their own. they are all BA (hons) graduates of Salford University in Music.
The band members
are :
James McKeown
– Keys
Baz Howard – Bass
Tony Greenhalgh – Drums
Ben Williams – Guitar
Simon Reynolds –
Tenor Saxophone
Chris Stevens – Trumpet
Kate Earley – Backing vocal
Claire Thorpe –
Backing Vocal
Kristyna Slapak – Lead Vocal
The songs are
arrarranged by the whole of the band and improvisation is key to a lot
of their material. Truly wonderful music that is in a league of its own.
We’ve all heard the very best in R’n’B but these guys
are among the very best.
Check out this band! You won’t be disappointed...

Fri
10 Mar - Ernest . £3
Ernest, in
stark contrast, are a fair way along the evolutionary scale as an outfit.
Their set starts with a groove, which in itself requires the basics of
playing as a unit, and delayed guitar stabs over layed with a spoken sample.
It saves on awkward introductions and sets the stage well for the rest
of the set. What they are doing is a groovy, funky thing which neither
slips over into obvious chilli pepperisms or stodgy straight armed
bad funk, an older R n B vibe perhaps but nothing too obvious and with
a classic northern edge to it.
Someone says
Wilko Johnson and in the visible bouncing tension in the singers shoulders
and eyes you see what he means. "Preggie" is a stormer and the
most melodic song in the set. (more please). Ernest. Well worth
a flying visit.
Just to prove
we do listen here at the Globe, Ernest are back! One of my personal favourites
of 2005 they ROCK!

Sat
11 Mar - Sam C Lees + Fayze2 (duo) . £3
Another great
night in prospect upstairs at the Globe. Having recently supported and
won the admiration of the legendary Walter Trout (John Mayall’s
Bluesbreakers and Canned Heat), brilliant local guitarist Sam C Lees is
back with his band (but minus his hair) playing another blistering rock
and blues set.
Joe and James
of Fayze 2 really need no introduction but suffice to say that the talent
and potential of these guys is frightening. Terrific harmonies and musicianship
from the lads from Royston Vasey.

15 Mar - Keith James: The Songs Of Nick Drake . £8 ticket £10
door
Each of Keith’s
previous 5 UK tours has seen audiences filling Arts Centres and Theatres
across the country to hear this music again. Nick Drake was somewhat of
a mystery to all during the few short years that he was writing and recording
music. Painful, full
of personal doubt and troubles, lonely and insular, he only lived to record
3 full albums.
It has only
been in the last 10 years that many thousands of listeners have come to
appreciate his beauty. Nick Drake has now, thankfully become the most
revered of all contemporary English Singer/Songwriters.

£5 tickets
are available at the bar and have been for a while please get your tickets
now... this will sell out! A very special and privileged night for the
Globe. At the time of writing, this show has yet to be seen by the Great
British Public. A hilarious lecture by John Otway teaching us how to be
a successful failure. Not
the normal Otway show, tonight will be hugely enjoyable and at a bargain
price of just £5 it’s a night not to
be missed.

Dominic Collins
is a Manchester born comedy songwriter is taking the Northwest folk &
comedy scene by storm, Dominic’s original songs of his childhood
and upbringing in the Ancoats area of the city not only strike a nostalgic
chord but also have his audiences in stitches. Comedian Dave Spikey said
on the Granada TV programme “Chasing the dream”
“And
then came along Dominic Collins, and it was like a breath of fresh air”.
He then went on to invite Dominic to play in Phoenix nights live stage
show at The Manchester Opera House.

Local lass
Eliza P kicks the night off with her irreverent take on life through her
songs and light hearted banter. It will be great to see Eliza back on
the stage at the Globe.

Sat
25 Mar - Myoho . £4
So many people
enjoyed these guys last time they were here that we just had to ask them
back. In just a few short months, Myoho have turned the idea of the typical
Mancunian musical success story on its head. In the place of typical onstage
detached 'cool', Myoho act like the unashamed pop stars they are sure
to become, five balls of enthusiasm with no interest in studied aloofness.
Instead of a mumbling, barely-tuneful frontman, Myoho boast a singer with
a terrific soul bellow sounding closer to Memphis than Manchester.
Myoho play
a startlingly original and funky mix of pop, rock, dance and blues, refreshingly
not conforming to the usual worthy, hip names to drop. Instead of the
predictable half-empty gatherings of the chin-stroking-in-crowd; Myoho
gigs are sell-out celebrations, a mass of dancing, smiling faces brought
together from all walks of life in the name of having a good time.

27 Mar - The Michael Rattray Allstars . £free
Currently on
a successful UK tour with Sam Brown, the Allstars have a night off and,
having heard about the Globe on the musicians grapevine, they really wanted
to come and play at our venue.
The Michael
Rattray Allstars are a four piece, Perth based band fronted by singer/songwriter
Michael Rattray. He created a band in his mind’s eye. His influences
ranged from Michael Jackson through to PJ Harvey and Nirvana,
and his inspiration came from his need to comment on and analyse the emotions
of daily life.
Seriously good
musicians with songs to match.
Fri
31 Mar - Operator Six . £3
Operator Six
are a four piece from in and around Bradford in the north of England.
The band consists of Adam Boyce (lead vocals / guitar), brother Alex Boyce
(guitar), Darren Akeroyd (bass) and Ian Atkinson (drums). What they do
is a blend of melodic, feel-good guitar based rock with an uplifting arsenal
of songs that so far have taken the band far showing no signs of stopping.
The band, well
known locally, managed to break out and create a buzz around themselves
by securing numerous dates with such Indie icons Ocean Colour Scene, hot
new London band 'Dogs', and British legend Paul Weller, playing to 4000
people at Birmingham Academy for OCS’s homecoming gig, and to a
larger crowd with Weller at Telford International Centre earlier last
year.
OperatorSix
continue to gig in the north of England and have appeared on BBC Radio’s
unsigned session, as
well as being Billed on the BBC Raw talent stage at the Bradford Festival.
As well as
performing live, the band have managed to produce a self funded and produced
studio album entitled ‘Alibi’, featuring 10 tracks of the
very material that has got them this far, it seems to touch everyone who
listens to it, receiving exciting reviews and feedback and inspiring the
progress on the bands second album.

7 Apr - Biggles Wartime Band . £tbc
Biggles Wartime
Band have been around a long time and are undoubtedly the leading exponents
of jug band music in the UK.
"Biggles
Wartime Band astounded the passers by at the bandstand in the Green Fields
last summer so much so that I had loads of phone calls about them. As
a consequence I then booked them to open the new working men's club building
in our village of Pilton and was equally amazed - they're such good fun"
- Michael Eavis, Glastonbury
Festival Supremo
Hold onto something
and prepare yourself for the hilarious onslaught of one of the funniest
cabaret bands in the UK today! Glastonbury regulars and complete maniacs,

matter how hard you might try! These guys are exponents of unavoidable

Sat
8 Apr - Acoustic Special . £4
Shaun T Hunter . Beck Goldsmith . Lisa Marie Glover . Jay Harden
BBCi - It's
fair to say that Cleckheaton's Shaun T Hunter has been through the mill
over the past 12 months - but the overwhelming feeling after hearing his
latest album is positivity mixed with a sense of redemption, says
our reviewer Martin Coldrick ...
"Life
may have a lot to throw at singer/songwriter Shaun - but listening to
'Flying Not Falling' you know that he'll pull through. The incredible
thing is that there's a fair chance he could take you along too - such
are the 'good vibes' flowing from the ten tracks here!
That's not
to say that this album is chock-full of relentlessly upbeat songs. That
would, frankly, make for a VERY irritating listen and I for one wouldn't
have got very far into this CD without having to reach for the 'off' button.
But thankfully it's not like that at all: it's much sneakier than that!
First, Shaun
T Hunter draws you in with his gorgeous tunes and vocals - very much his
trademark. Then you start listening closer to the words. Shaun's one hell
of a good storyteller, transporting the listener into the worlds he creates.
Then there's the air of calm optimism which infuses the album. That begins
to creep up on you over repeated listens - and despite the fact that life
is sometimes pretty hard (you may have noticed) - you do end up emerging
from the other end of this album with a smile on your face. Not bad going
really!
See www.shaunthunter.com
Beck Goldsmith
is magnificent live. Her talent and artistry imbibes her performance with
inspiring, soulful vocals that send shivers to infinity and beyond. A
crisp, clean and clear voice evaporates any distractions.
Intelligent,
intimate and hypnotic, Beck has a presence that innocently demands your
attention in a delicate yet satisfying way. It’s great to see her
back.
Lisa Marie
Glover is as mad as a bucket of frogs yet still manages to craft some
absolutely wonderful songs with lyrics to spark your imagination. An excellent
musician with a beautiful voice, Lisa’s shows are always a joy
to watch.
Listening to
the music of Jay Harden is like taking a ride on an old steam engine train
making its way slowly down along the banks of the Mississippi River and
heading toward the delta. Mixing a bit of irony and surrealism in his
lyrics, one sometimes never fully understands exactly what he's trying
to say, but the feeling comes across with his emotive singing and interpretation,
weaving his voice and guitar together to make a very
original sound.
