30 June – Lear + Sam C Lees £4
What a brilliant
way to finish the month! Lear From Wales and the mighty Sam C Lees performing
a rare solo set! Lear posess that vital ingredient that so many of today's
bands lack, these boyz is goooood...Math Priest (Dodgy), Rhythm magazine
"A talent
waiting to be exploited" - Glynn Pegler, Culture Magazine
"Raw energy, I want to have their children" - Buzz Magazine
"Lear are kings of their own genre" - Headline, Mono Magazine
There's nothing
more important than 'Performing' for a rock band... And their playing
was top notch - Mike
Nardone, Director of A&R Universal Music Group
www.learworld.co.uk
Sam C Lees
is one of the truly outstanding guitarists, influenced by one of the all-time
greats Stevie Ray Vaughn. Toniught sees Sam step out of his traditional
loud rocking and rolling blues band persona, and into the more fragile
world of solo performance. We doubt if there'll be any shortage of fireworks
though ...

1 July The Good & Lisa Marie Glover £4
The Good's
infectious sound is stealing peoples' ears and hearts around the UK! Their
fresh sound features amazing male/female vocals that are so tight sometimes
you'd swear both voices were coming from the one person. Meeting at University
while studying classical music degrees, Gareth (guitar/vocals) and Heather
(bass/vocals) have brought their traditional roots into the indie-pop,
folk-rock arena, to create music with depth, performances with class and
melodies that stick.
Arriving in
England in May 2004, The Good have already made their impression. Some
of The Good's highlights have included: performing at D&G's 2005 International
Men's Fashion Show in Milan; completing a successful, national tour in
early 2005; selling out of two releases; being nominated for the PRS Atom
Award; receiving an ABC Music Award for their song
"Miss You"; securing a national fan base; and all this has generated
a growing industry interest!

8 July Crooked Trail Tour - Beck Goldsmith, Jenny McCormick and Lisa Marie
Glover (Free)
The crooked
trail; A trail which crosses paths at a very interesting defining point
along a fascinating road in the name of acoustic beauty. The signpost
on the junction of this amazing trip shows the names of Beck Goldsmith,
Jenny McCormick and Lisa Marie Glover. Each positively awesome in their
own right, they come together to bring the heart and soul of acoustic
music firmly into its own, on a very special night.
A
solo set that showcases the individual brilliance followed by an astounding
amalgamation of talent, breathless, gorgeous and simply beautiful. Beck
Goldsmith is the kind of artist who appeals to your mind and then punches
you in the stomach. Not literally, of course, but the smart and innovative
nature of Beck’s songwriting coupled with the conviction and sensitivity
in her delivery give an immediate impact and leave a lasting impression.
Beck’s rich acoustic sound is peppered with the tones and colours
of folk and country, whilst her biting lyricism and melodic momentum add
a darker, intriguing edge. On stage, Beck’s modest presence belies
her strength of character and musicianship, and by the end of the first
song the audience is unfailingly blown away. She is an all-rounder; a
talented recording artist and
a stunning live performer.
“You
get the impression that when Beck writes, she writes songs. By that I
mean there are songwriters that set lyrics to music. They see the words
and add the sounds. Beck gives the impression of doing it whole so that
it's never just the sum of its parts …It has taken Beck, a 24-year
old singer-songwriter from Mansfield, 10 years from writing her first
song on her dads beaten-up guitar to releasing her self-produced debut
album - but its been worth the wait. Her songs are heavily folk influenced
but highly original and a delight to listen to. The backings give the
whole album a sense of variety, featuring not just the usual acoustic
guitar but a wide range of instruments including piano, cello, harp and
flute. However, its set at just the right level to allow her voice to
shine through - a voice that is as clear as a bell, with an excellent
vocal range. I thoroughly enjoyed Purely Second Guesses, one of the best
albums I’ve reviewed in a long time and look forward to hearing
a lot more from Beck Goldsmith,a talented young lady who stands out from
the crowd " - Dave Emery, The Folk Mag
Jenny
McCormick is Manchester born and bred. She has always lived there and
probably always will, as she is a homebody at heart. When she was small,
Jenny's dad sang and wrote and played guitar and a lot of his friends
were musicians. There were always a lot of records around the house and
she listened to them
all.
Jenny is romantic
and thoughtful and has a biting wit, lurking beneath a rather shy exterior.
When she was at school, she liked to write stories. She often tried to
write books at home but would always start and never quite finish. When
Jenny realised that she liked playing music herself, it made sense to
put some of her stories into songs. Like a lot of people who do this,
Jenny spends a lot of time sat at the end of her bed playing her guitar
and this is mainly when
her songs come out.
Some of Jenny's
songs are traditional folk songs, some aren't. Some sound traditional,
some don't. But ultimately she always sounds like herself, which is all
that is important. Some songs are about Jenny or things that have happened
to her or things she has seen. Some aren't. This doesn't matter either,
so long as the story is told well. To this end, Jenny thought it would
be a good idea to put some of her songs down onto a CD and this has happened
on her own label, 'Square Peg'. Her debut album is called 'Me, I Prefer
the Moon' and was recorded by
herself and a small group of family and friends, at each of their homes
in the North
West. The title track, 'Me, I Prefer the Moon', captures this perfectly,
taking the past for what it is and looking toward new tomorrows.
Since the age
of 15, Lisa Marie Glover has been crafting her songs and performing them
all around the North West of England as well as appearing at venues in
Argentina, Spain and France. Lisa's music is a mix of Blues, Jazz and
Folk with a sharp twist of cheeky mischief and occasional elements of
electronica. Her music consists of delicious melodies, interesting dynamics
and rhythms with unexpected twists and turns. Her voice is clear, true
and emotive and her lyrics are sharp and imaginative. Her music also features

21 July Fayze2 + The Deadbeats £6
Ok, lets start
at the beginning. Joe and James Fay began singing and playing guitar together
shortly after having their umbilical cords snipped. Their natural abilities
and unshakable faith in each others talents were soon transposed into
the world of songwriting. Yet it became apparent that if they were to
achieve their dreams and aspirations, it was imperative for them to begin
writing and performing as a band. Hand picking the finest fruits from
the musical orchard that surrounded them, they joined forces with the
rhythm section of Dave Brodie (bass) and Tom Western (drums). From here
Fayze 2 have been on an unstoppable ascendancy utilising their blend of
musical genres in amalgamation with musical virtuosity, on stage energy
and songwriting sensibilities. Recently, the band have played prestigious
gigs at venues such as Manchester Academy, and finished 2nd in a battle
of the bands event featuring almost every unsigned band in Liverpool.
A new record is on the way to completion so make sure you keep your eyes
and ears peeled for Fayze 2!
What's most
surprising about The Deadbeats is that they've only been together since
early 2004 when they met up for what they describe as 'an excuse to hang
out with each other'. Lead singer Sam Hammond bumped into ex-housemate
Luke Daniel (electric guitar) who had already recruited other members
of that same Salford household Dom Kozubik (bass) and Simon Fairbairn
(drums) for a blues jam. Sam agreed and the quintet was complete when
Dom suggested London born singer-songwriter Jo Dudderidge play keyboards.
Initially the boys were getting together only occasionally as each was
involved in separate projects. Their first track was Dylan influenced
'Get on the beat' which Sam had been twiddling with for a while.
The introduction
of gospel organ and melodic bass-line lifted the tune and made the band
realize they could do so much more than jam the blues. Other tracks like
Bang Brother Bang and Emptying My Pockets established their early country
sound. It was a natural yet unlikely direction for them, as, with the
exception of Sam, they had little experience in American roots music or
country.
'Our sound
was created from our inability to replicate our influences' says Jo. 'We'd
all come from different parts of the country' with different musical backgrounds
but found ourselves in Manchester with this energy and mutual
appreciation for having a good time.'

22 July South Paw Grammer (free)
"We're
a four piece indie band from Manchester. We've only been going since mid
2005, in that time mainly focusing on writing and perfecting songs of
our own building up quite a back catalogue. We began to look for gigs
at the end of last year and have only found a few places as of yet. The
songs we play are mostly originals although we sometimes put a few covers
in there for a bit of variation. Our style ranges from soft anthemic ballads
to hard hitting rock n roll, with everything inbetween. We'll let our
music do the rest of the talking."

29 July Martin Harley Band & Support £4
Martin Harley
is a mesmerizing singer/songwriter whose original sound draws on influences
from old time blues and folk to classic rock. A blend of three part harmonies
over a back drop of stunning slide and finger style guitar, homemade acoustic
bass and brush drums completes the Martin Harley Band's
unique sound.
The band's
live show is an unforgettable experience, from the striking combination
of material, to the animated performance of the musicians. Whether playing
to a small and intimate group, or a rowdy festival crowd, the band's energy
and enthusiasm infiltrate the audience. Martin has played alongside blues
legend Ben Andrews and soul marvel Gino Washington as well as featuring
on sessions with Sinead O'Connor and Natacha Atlas. Adam Wolters' dynamic
bass playing and Pete Swatton's inspired percussion complete the line
