Martin HarleySat 29 July Martin Harley Band & Support £4

Martin Harley is a mesmerizing singer/songwriter whose original sound draws on influences from old time blues and folk to classic rock. A blend of three part harmonies over a back drop of stunning slide and finger style guitar, homemade acoustic bass and brush drums completes the Martin Harley Band's unique sound.

The band's live show is an unforgettable experience, from the striking combination of material, to the animated performance of the musicians. Whether playing to a small and intimate group, or a rowdy festival crowd, the band's energy and enthusiasm infiltrate the audience. Martin has played alongside blues legend Ben Andrews and soul marvel Gino Washington as well as featuring on sessions with Sinead O'Connor and Natacha Atlas. Adam Wolters' dynamic bass playing and Pete Swatton's inspired percussion complete the line up - together they have played Guilfest and Reading festival, appeared on Sky One and supported Chas' n Dave, The Pogues, Ian Brown and the Cardigans.

Please get here early!!! Anyone who was here for the first show will be back again with mass of mates for this one...

Orphan BoyFri 18 Aug Orphan Boy + support (free)

Manchester Independent Label’s New Signing ‘Orphan Boy’. A few months back they spent their days prowling the promenade with ice-creams, staring out to sea and wondering if life was actually going anywhere. These days they are one of the talked-about bands in the most talked-up city and are signed to one of the most promising indie labels in the land.

Orphan Boy signed to Concrete Recordings on Friday March 31st amid the inconspicuous surroundings of Sinclair's Oyster Bar, central Manchester. This comes little over a year after the band formed in their hometown Grimsby – a place so devoid of glamour that it boasts not one single footnote in the entire history of rock'n'roll. The townie trio, raised on shit nightclubs and fish factories, arrived in Manchester towards the end of 2005 totally at odds with the industry trend-setters. They soon began kicking up a fuss, armed as they were with killer songs and scruffy barnets and backed by their nutcase fanbase, the Bebop Council Pop Orphanite Anti-social Brigade.

Concrete Recordings, already well-known as the only label hosting a stage at Glastonbury festival, were at the time looking to follow-up the success of their debut signings The Deadbeats. What they found when they spotted Orphan Boy was exactly what they, and the rest of Manchester, had been waiting for: a band of unassuming brilliance that would not be contained for long. Now band and label are at the forefront of a buzzing new wave of Manchester bands (Polytechnic, Fear of Music, the Magic O’s, the Pedestrians, The Deadbeats, The Casinos, The V.Cs) that are set to drag the musical focus back across the Pennines in 2006. Put away your winkle-pickers and get on yer dancing shoes ...

Fri 1 Sep TBC

Paula DarwishSat 2 Sep Paula Darwish Country and Eastern Band (free)

Singer/songwriter Paula Darwish is highly respected amongst both the London Turkish Community and observers of Manchester’s vibrant music scene. She has coined the term “country & eastern” to describe her own music, influences & background .‘Country & Eastern’ is neither commercial fusion nor purist folk; it is the musical idiom that derives naturally from Paula’s diverse musical heritage. She cites her main influences as Fairuz, Arif Sag, Kzrmak, Sirwan Pervez, Xharis Alexiou, Buffy Saint Maire and Emmy Lou Harris.

She composes original material in English and Turkish, incorporating elements of Turkish & Kurdish traditional music. She has an impressively wide range of material in English, Kurdish and Turkish all seamlessly brought together by the distinctive country and eastern sound. Her live performances are known for their energy, improvisation and never being the same twice.

Fri 15 Sep Alt Night

Some more information to follow (maybe!!!)

Sat 16 Sep Fayze2 (Free)

Ok, lets start at the beginning. Joe and James Fay began singing and playing guitar together shortly after having their umbilical cords snipped. Their natural abilities and unshakable faith in each others talents were soon transposed into the world of songwriting. Yet it became apparent that if they were to achieve their dreams and aspirations, it was imperative for them to begin writing and performing as a band. Hand picking the finest fruits from the musical orchard that surrounded them, they joined forces with the rhythm section of Dave Brodie (bass) and Tom Western (drums). From here Fayze 2 have been on an unstoppable ascendency utilising their blend of musical genres in amalgamation with musical virtuosity, on stage energy and songwriting sensibilities. Recently, the band have played prestigious gigs at venues such as Manchester Academy, and finished 2nd in a battle of the bands event featuring almost every unsigned band in Liverpool. A new record is on the way to completion so make sure you keep your eyes and 1ears peeled for Fayze 2!
