Kid At The BackSat 18 Nov Kid at the Back (free)
Kid At The Back formed in early 2003 in Hertfordshire. Bored with the everyday musical mediocrity being churned out to the public every day, they decided enough was enough, someone had to do something!!!! After a chance meeting at a mutual workplace, semi professional session musicians, Zac Whitaker (vocals, guitar) and Matt Gornicki (drums) spent six months in a rehearsal studio writing and arranging songs whilst also searching for an amazing Bass player. This came in the shape of Anthony Durrant, an old friend of Matts who had previously worked with Matt in the band Cadre. Five months later Kid At The Back played their first live show at The Horn Reborn, St Albans. This was a roaring success and the band was invited back to take part in the venues annual Battle Of The Bands competition.

After four months of gigs they reached the semi-finals and were narrowly beaten by Enter Shikari. Not satisfied with this the band entered two more competitions. The Flag in Watford and The Fountain in Tottenham. This time both finals were reached and they were narrowly beaten by Bush Dr and The Subways(yes those Subways!) Also in this time Kid At The Back music has been heard worldwide with repeated airtime on British Forces Radio and providing the soundtrack for surfers and skaters on channel four and satellites, Extreme Sports Show. On the back of this success KATB are undertaking a big promotional campaign to ensure their music is available to a wider audience. KATB then went on to perform in and win the EmergenzaUK unsigned band festival. This saw them taken to Germany to perform at the Taubertal international festival in front of 20,000 people. This also saw them announced among the top twenty unsigned bands worldwide by Emergenza/JAR Music. Since the festival, unfortunately bass player Ant decided he could not keep up with the bands now hectic schedule. He has since left on very good terms and been replaced by new bass player Ed Pyle.

Sat 25 Nov Quirky Turquoise
"Quirky Turquoise are a rare breed of band…they bring together a diverse range of original music, from 60’s west-coast pop to contemporary garage grunge, and fuse it into their own highly distinctive style. The songs are infuriatingly melodic and Diane Smith’s voice is both uplifting and fascinating as it explores textures and timbres from across the spectrum of pop, soul and jazz.

The band line-up of female vocal harmonies, guitar, bass, drums and flute provide the perfect vehicle for all these great tunes. QT' pay lip service to no one, and don’t need to - it’s all their own work. Catch the band live and if you already own their wonderful debut album Jelly Cream and Cakes, you won’t be able to resist singing along." - John Gill, Fishpond, Matlock Bath, Derbyshire.

Michael Chapman

Fri 1st Dec Mike Walters Presents: Michael Chapman
"brlliant folk guitarist" Andy Gill Independent 2002
"Michael Chapman was never just a singer-songwriter - his gritty brand of guitar based songs span folk, ragtime, jazz and blues... it's on the tracks which feature Chapman's magnificently bleary vocals that this album really scores. Hell To Pay and Only Pretend are outstanding tracks, that world- weary voice singing words of bitter experience. This man is so laid back that he makes JJ Cale sound like he's on helium."

The StrangedaysSat 16th Dec The Strangedays (Free)
The Strangedays are 4 lads from Manchester with a shared love of everything from Free to AC/DC to The Doors to Pearl Jam. Formed by vocalist and guitarist Chris and bassist Ad in 2001 after a jam at a local music venue went so well they thought it was about time more people heard their music. Their music is unashamedly big in sound and they produce classic tunes that if you are going to stick your neck out, sounds as though they have created their own rock n roll sound to great effect. The Strangedays have been winning over the growing crowds of people passionate about music in Manchester and wherever their music is heard it's demanding attention. Most put this mainly down to there powerful and passionate live performances which has made them know as one of the best unsigned live bands around.

Morgan Le FayeFri 22nd Dec Morgan Le Faye + Janus
Early in 2003 Carmel and Heather (then aged 16 and 15) began songwriting as an extension of their enthusiasm for writing poetry and playing music. Their first "proper" song, "Happy again" was well-received by family and friends, and in February 2003 they made their first visit to "Shipwreck Studios" in Glossop to record the track. During 2003 they continued to write further songs, influenced by their love of bands and singers like The Corrs, Kate Rusby, Dido and Sarah McLachlan. In July 2005 Morgan Le Faye, now joined by Thea Hanson-Orr, took part in a World Record attempt for the longest recording marathon. This featured unsigned bands from the Manchester area. Each band had an hour to record their songs, and the whole marathon lasted 24 hours. The record was broken and 12 of the best tracks were released on CD, MLF’s ‘Paint Me a Perfect Day’ was one of them.

In March 2006, MLF created a web page on ‘Myspace’ and included 4 of their tracks for people to listen to. Within a couple of weeks the tracks, with hey Hey leading in the number of plays, were topping the Folk Rock and Folk charts for unsigned artists, not only in the North west but also (on 1st May) in the World! Who knows what could happen next! This is the history of Janus, born as a progressive rock band made up of English musicians in Krefeld in Germany in 1970, retired broke and unknown in 1973, despite being signed to the prestigious EMI "Harvest" label, alongside such bands as Deep Purple, Pink Floyd, and Edgar Broughton. Re-born in 1990, and just achieving success in 2001 NOT TOO BE MISSED!!!
