Rory Gallagher Live At Montreux DVD CoverNEW YEAR MESSAGE – HAPPY 2007
courtesy of Donal Gallagher

Hopefully you all had a good Christmas. We come to the end of a year, which has been quite productive and seen the continued rise in Rory’s popularity with the release of;

  • “Live at the Cork Opera House”, on DVD, which has recently won the DVD Association award for excellence vying with U2’s DVD for the no.1 spot and has achieved platinum status in Ireland, as has the Rockpalast DVD.
  • ‘Rory at Montreux’ (Eagle Rock) which also topped many European charts is on its way to hitting the platinum status in Ireland and is currently Gold there and the third straight No1 DVD in the territory. Also important, Montreux has been given a U.S. release and is doing well there, leaving the opportunity to do further issues with this company. The Montreux album currently sits at no. 9 on WHUS91.7 F.M.’s chart.  At the time of writing, Eagle Rock are in the process of acquiring the “Rockpalast”, series for the U.S. & Canada and the company are likely to also make available the “Cork Opera House” title.

Tributes to Rory continue:

  • The unveiling by guitarist Edge of the bronze replica of Rory’s guitar at Rory Gallagher Place, Templebar, Dublin, in June.
  • The ‘stratocaster’ featured as a centre piece at Fender’s Instruments 60th   anniversary celebrations at Galleries Layfette, Paris earlier in the year.
  • Rory Gallagher's 1st Guitar, as viewed at Triskel Gallery 2006A highlight of the year was the exhibition put on at the Triskel Gallery, Lavetts Quay, Cork, by Ben Cudihy and his team, the curators developed an intimate sense of my brother.
  • Currently, Rory’s instruments are the feature of the “History of the Electric Guitar” exhibition at the National Museum of Ireland. This exhibition will move to Harrods, London to open on the 1st Feb 07, as part of the stores 40th anniversary celebrations of their Way-In Department. Ironically, Rory and Taste (Eric and Norman) played for the opening of the Department; the unusual gig was an early London appearance and was done as an audition for Polydor Records.
  • On the 29th Dec.’06 an unveiling of a bronze plaque was dedicated to Rory at the Ulster Hall, Belfast. This event was followed by a Sinnerboy and Pat McManus concert at the venue, which the organisers hope will become an annual gig in that city. Later, Double Vision played a follow-up gig at ‘Morrisons’ (across from the Ulster Hall) into the early hours.

Rory GallagherWe look forward to the year ahead:

  • This should see the production of the Martin Guitar acoustic tribute model.
  • Also, our sights are set on the completion of the Rory documentary,
  • A music book.
  • Now that their merger has bedded in a little better, I am hoping for a bigger effort from Sony&BMG / Legacy in the promotion of Rory’s music, in particular in the U.S A, Australia & New Zealand.

My thanks to each and everyone for the continued support for Rory and his music. Also, thanks to the organisers of the various tribute gigs held throughout the World.

I appreciate your messages of support as well as the criticisms, I can understand the frustrations some may have in not seeing Rory’s music more accessible but there are many complex aspects of the ‘business’ that have to be handled, with only so many hours in a day and there is a lot of territory to cover but I’ll continue to do my best.

Wishing you all the Best for a Great 2007
Donal Gallagher
