"The loudest skiffle band in the world!"
When I first promoted a run of live band gigs back in er ... most certainly the band that sparked the bigger picture into life were The Gutter Brothers, a stunning street skiffle band from London, fronted by a tall and super New Orleans frontman. The band had a fantastic career and a little of that commercial success thing, sadly however losing Dennis their tea-chest bassist to illness during the early 90's. In Den's memory, the band return for occasional shows, hence for one Northern night only ...

Darren Poyzer's 'Songbook' - The Art of Organic Songwriting
Borders Books, Birstall

Unit 2, Geldred Road Retail Park, Holden Ing Way, Birstall, Batley WF17 9DT
Tel: 01924 474914

Borders BooksNot only a live performance, but a presentation and informal workshop on the art of songwriting in it's most honest, organic form. There's free refreshments and in-store Starbucks, tickets @ £2 refundable against in-store purchase.
See Borders Birstall (directions etc)
Borders Books in Birstall (that's near Batley, West Yorks btw) has always been a good place for me to play and make new friends. And it's time for a return, so as part of their Autumn season of events I've been invited back in-store.

'Songbook' is the title of this particular event, a 3 set live session looking at organic songwriting through discussion and live performance, with a little quaestion and answer, plus of course free refreshments and optional in-store Starbucks.

In particular I look forward to playing a few new things in open tuning, and generally enjoying that person to person vibe.

I am so not comfortable with the idea of having a 'fan' page, however ego dictates, and for those who do facebook things, here it is, loaded up with vids and songs, concert dates, discussion and all that gubbins:

One thing you might enjoy is the short film project being undertaken by Joe Ogden, and in particular I hope the soundtrack to 'Dead Beat Scene One' ...

And here's a little gem courtesy of Bob Massey, the drummer in a little pub band I was in, playing my first guitar back in 1986. No hat ... but look at that shirt!

Poyzer, Fluff and FarrellPetticoat Tales and other Videos
Those of you fortunate to catch one of the rare Poyzer, Fluff and Farrell live performances, may be interested to know that I still hope, one day in the not too distant, to get that superb line-up on the road. You never know ...

'In the can' we have three superb recordings, working title 'The Stonier Cave Sessions' produced by Nigel Stonier and engineered by Mike Cave. You can get a little sound bite of these at www.poyzer.com/pff.

Since recording these, Fluff has been out on the road with Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake) and Thea Gilmore, and she's acquired a little duet outing for us in Natwich town centre later this month.

Anyway, one from the secret hidden archives, here's a gem of a video taken during a DeBees concert, a fab version of Pettocoat Tales featuring the magnificent Kevin Farrell on acoustic, and Fluff on the fiddle.

Sanjay PoyzerSanjay Poyzer @ Underage Festival
Seeing my nephew Sanjay progress has been fantastic. I was chuffed when he was a young trendy and I found my own songs proud of place on his playlist alongside some of the more credible for kudos alternative soundtracks of his generation. I helped acquire his first acoustic guitar, and subsequently was delighted when he'd made a conscious decision to move on to the bass.

Now he's 17, he's buzzed on music college, and his bass playing has took him into jazz ensembles and basically every live outing he can sell himself into.

His own band is an outrageously musical riot, they are called Temporarily Blank, and they make their first proper music festival appearance this Friday August 8th, at The Underage Festival, Victoria Park, London. Alas, I'm a little older than the ticket allows me to be, so I'll miss this one.

Please allow me this moment to be a proud uncle ... ouch, that hurts in an age kinda way :-)

Legend speaks of a crazy and magical August evening in 1988 when, in a very real sense, the true Witchwood spirit as you know it, was born. This was the very first ‘Stereo Graffiti’ night, an evening featuring a wooden-legged blues man, a plaster-cast-legged compere, and a band called Willumwozzumbullumbuzzum. When the follow-up night took place, a packed pub and 2 bands stared at a stage with no sound system, until at the last minute speakers and cables and mic stands were being passed over punters heads, down to the stage for a 2nd quite outrageously rock’n’roll event of indie excellence.

Within weeks, local hands were being supported by the likes of Steve Coogan, Frank Skinner and Caroline Ahearne, The Mock Turtles taking their turn as one of many fledgling bands cutting their live teeth in an awesome atmosphere of respect, peace, love and excitement.

The Witchwood at that time was a small pub, one room about ½ the size it is now. Newspapers weren’t even bothered in carrying gig listings at first, however such was the vibe and the magic of the place that Manchester and eventually the UK took notice. As the venue underwent refurb to become the place it is today, so was the legend cemented and the Witchwood went from strength to strength, from genre and scene to genre and scene, each with un-dying passion and respect for live music performance.

As a special celebration of the 20 year anniversary of that very first night, some of the acclaimed and outstanding bands and musicians from those days return for a special one-off occasion. There’s a tasty bbq to cure hunger, loads of decent people to get along with, and above all, truly fantastic music and atmosphere. Don’t miss this one!

Rob Metcalfe and Ian ScanlanDeBees Bank Holiday Acoustic Day
Monday August 25th from 1pm
'3 Chords & The Truth' Acoustic Festival Day
Debees, 17-19 Market Palce, Winsford, Cheshire CW7 3DA

The friendliest close music community gig to me these days is at Debees in Winsford, home to some most decent and very special musicians and songwriters.

Some of the people have been busy releasing new albums this year, and running a radio show called The Hive on Cheshire FM. Central characters of note include Damon Horrill, Ian Scanlan, Scottish John, Guitar Mal, Gary Fulton and Rob Metcalfe.

I am running a new series of monthly acoustic gatherings entitled '3 Chords & The Truth' at the venue from the end of September, and to launch into the new season we're hosting a special day of acoustic songwriters and combos.

There's still some places on this if you want to play, so please do get back at me if you wanna put yourself in the frame.

Chris DiffordChris Difford Songwriters Retreat in Wales
September 28th - October 5th 2008
Hurst House, nr Carmarthen . See www.hurst-house.co.uk/wales

I've had the magnificent pleasure of writing and performing at two of Chris Difford's songwriting weeks in Italy, and due to other committments I'll be sad to miss this one. Nevertheless, here's the info, I wholeheartedly recommend this to you if you like to write an acoustic song or two.

The week begins on the 28th September, and a map of the hotel is included in the web site. There will also be car sharing from central London. The cost of the week is £650 paid directly to the hotel on departure. All meals are included, you will however have to pay for your own drinks and any spa treatments separately. To book your place on this wonderful inspirational week please email spiritofhuntsham@gmail.com as soon as you can as the rooms are filling up very quickly.

You will, in Chris' own words "come away totally in love with the house, its ambience and attention to detail. It is an oasis of inspiration."

And finally, if it interests you and you've got this far, my current reading is the most superbly presented and published new book written by the frontman of one of my fave bands, The Chameleons.

I'm only into the browsing at present, taking bits of this intriguing autobiography at my leisure, but I can tell you the writing and the trail through Mark's life, both personally and in music, is one that has me gripped.

Much recommended, especially if you already know Mark, and are aware of the massive place in alternative music history he deserves.

Read all about it at www.guardian-angel-media.com.

Thank you, as always I truly appreciate your time and consideration,
Darren
