Jolly Jok from BigglesGlastonbury - review, and massive thank yous

It's been widely reported that this year's Glastonbury was one of the very best, and it's wonderful how that has reverberated around so many people, across so many different areas of the vast festival site.

For me personally, before I go any further, I'd like to thank Biggles Wartime Band for making me their guest and community member, thus bringing about the opportinity to enjoy and be a part of such a wonderful occasion.

I had the pleasure of seeing three excellent Biggles performances, and for those new to this band, they are "undoubtedly the leading exponents of jugband music in the UK". Always much lauded for their live shows, especially at Glasto which is their home from home, the band have a couple of shows local to Manchester coming along in December in Hyde and Poynton, so please do check them out at www.biggleswartimeband.co.uk.

My other big thank you is for Fluff on the fiddle, who was officially there with The Boat Band, but joined me for two really special gigs on the Croissant Neuf Bandstand. I have to say that the first of these especially drew a very large crowd and was outstanding and very special, even prompting a "come on Glastonbury" from the usually very reserved Fluff, and allowing me to punch the air at the end of the set, knocking the microphone off it's stand and catching it before any notable coolness was lost.

On a personal not also, I need to say how brill it was to see my nephew Sanjay there, especially as I got the chance to introduce him to Biggles, and he took me to see Jason Mraz which was an eye opener, fantastic.

Neil Young's Rockin' In The Free World ending was super - expect a Poyzer version sometime soon! It was lovely to see an impromptu Glenn Tilbrook set, to make new friends and to see so many wonderful artistes, most of whom will never make the mainstream. Sorted.

Darren Poyzer being filmed live in session for Our HouseOur House - online TV Show, Poyzer in session and interview

Our House can be found online at www.ourhouse-manchester.co.uk and if you go check out Season 2 Episode 1 you'll find yours truly in session for 2 songs and taking a splendid interview with Claire Curran.

All in all it's a fantastic and very entertaining 40 minutes of online telly!

The songs filmed are: 'Catch If You Can' and 'Thinking Of You', both to be found on the soon to be released 'Bloody Love Songs' cd.

"Our House is an independent television show produced in Manchester. We want to offer you the best of unsigned talent. A mixture of music, guests and celebrity guest presenters. What makes it so amazing is basically explained in the title. It is produced in a house with guest interviews on the sofa and live performances in the living room! We are a production company from Manchester who believe in supporting independent music and we take this very seriously. We promise to provide you with great raw talent, filmed live, and full of our passion for music. So go ahead what are you waiting for?! ENJOY!!!!"

I am also compering the Acoustic Sets on Sunday, when Jamie and Roydan will be performing alongside the likes of David Gordon, Mark Dennis, Jason Johnson, Helen Walford, Garron Frith, David Raines and Aimee Lines.

As well as an outstanding weekend of live music and entertainment there will be Children’s Events - Juggling Workshops, Fairey Theatre, Dragon Painting, Storytellers, Kids Disco, Junk Band, Meditation for Mental Health, Mental Health First Aid Training and Presentations on self-help & mental health.

Bloody Love Songs cd coverBloody Love Songs - so where are we at then ...

The brand new Poyzer collection of recordings entitled 'Bloody Love Songs' is, barring a last minute re-think, in the can. There's a plan to produce and distribute cd's very soon, with energies at first to be spent on circulating around 'industry' contacts for airplay and promotional bookings.

I've a sneaky idea to launch this in some kinda blaze of candles for Valentines Day 2010, but please rest assured that those who want tracks before then, will be able to recieve them in one format or another.

Yes I am the world's worst at getting my own recordings out there so in the meantime, www.poyzer.com has some preview listening available, go click :-)

Darren PoyzerWhat may lie ahead ...

It's an incredibly feeling is a cracking good gig, and this year for me personally to have played sets lasting in excess of 2 hours, travelling home with the cheers still ringing in my ears, has been quiet something. This progress has been more than I ever imagined, the joy without the hassles of stardom, the freedom to be who I am without the make-up and the fake-up.

And of course the support of those wonderful fellow musicians, recently Fluff, Roydan Styles, Jamie Parkes, Mark Dennis and Matt Thelwell to name a few.

And through my special needs work, the ultimate goal of having something of value to give back to people who really need something that I can provide.

Then there's the new cd, and the promise it brings. The rollercoaster rolls onwards and upwards ...

I guess however we creatives are a little insecure at times, it's all in the fingerprint, and as for mine, well sometimes I can hit the floor by the time I get home. That means that I often lack in confidence, I fear failure and have to draw on great energy reserves to get back on the horse. That for me is the most difficult thing, when I get tired, when the many miles of foot to the floor start to hurt.

I've known and been inspired by many great artistes over the years, and I've watched and learned, and seen how they evolve, how they use their energies wisely and ensure longevity. Or, in some cases, I've seen burn-out in the brightest stars. Falling off a stage is one heck of a fall to take and survive, at whatever level you are, and often the fall comes at the very beginning, preventing so many from going on to enjoy the thrill of live performance..

So each year I prepare well for the fatigue, I hit the ground walking as I look for fresh opportunities, keeping expectations in check, and worrying a little about age, health, keeping the little pot of money rolling, and ensuring I don't get tainted by the darker sides of the industry.

It's strange how some people think I am incredibly blessed with lots of gigs - it's actually nowhere near where it was 5 or 6 years ago, however in perspective in the current climate, I do seem to play my fair quota.

This year again looks like being excellent, although in comparison dipping, as the Autumn season surely won't bring the activity of recent years. I have to say however, this is not a bad thing - I really do need to view time off as being of value, especially as I need to promote the new cd from out of the office, and put some serious admin hours in to get it out there.

There's also the slight issue of a little ligament trouble in my left hand, being horribly irritated by an upper arm, shoulder and neck problem. These things need rest, and so maybe I'll be seen a little less frequently this year for that reason also.

There are plenty of superb acoustic artistes out there, and whilst some fear cutting back and losing ground in a competitive sense, I personally think that the more artistes there are playing great shows and developing a healthy live music circuit, the better for all of us who have the energy to stup up and take it on.

It's fair therefore to say that a slow winding down process - to ensure I don't take a fall, and to ensure longevity - is now under way. In a nutshell, from here onwards, we'll be keeping it special, so if I don't turn up for a while, no worries, there will be plenty of website activity and I'll see you in person soon enough.

Who knows what the new cd might bring ... that's what makes it always so exciting!

Thanks for listening in,
lotsofluvnstuff as always, dp x
