Orphan BoyFri 18 Aug Orphan Boy + support (free)

Manchester Independent Label’s New Signing ‘Orphan Boy’. A few months back they spent their days prowling the promenade with ice-creams, staring out to sea and wondering if life was actually going anywhere. These days they are one of the talked-about bands in the most talked-up city and are signed to one of the most promising indie labels in the land.

Orphan Boy signed to Concrete Recordings on Friday March 31st amid the inconspicuous surroundings of Sinclair's Oyster Bar, central Manchester. This comes little over a year after the band formed in their hometown Grimsby – a place so devoid of glamour that it boasts not one single footnote in the entire history of rock'n'roll. The townie trio, raised on shit nightclubs and fish factories, arrived in Manchester towards the end of 2005 totally at odds with the industry trend-setters. They soon began kicking up a fuss, armed as they were with killer songs and scruffy barnets and backed by their nutcase fanbase, the Bebop Council Pop Orphanite Anti-social Brigade.

Concrete Recordings, already well-known as the only label hosting a stage at Glastonbury festival, were at the time looking to follow-up the success of their debut signings The Deadbeats. What they found when they spotted Orphan Boy was exactly what they, and the rest of Manchester, had been waiting for: a band of unassuming brilliance that would not be contained for long. Now band and label are at the forefront of a buzzing new wave of Manchester bands (Polytechnic, Fear of Music, the Magic O’s, the Pedestrians, The Deadbeats, The Casinos, The V.Cs) that are set to drag the musical focus back across the Pennines in 2006. Put away your winkle-pickers and get on yer dancing shoes ...

Sat 19 August  Illicit Still + support (free)

The Illicit Still are 5 blokes with a mission; currently making a truck load of demos work in the live arena to add to their ever growing arsenal of songs, playing with samplers and figuring out whos doing what. Its all going well. They have an established live sound; veering dangerously between Punk and Prog Rock and throwing in Folk, Dance, Trip-hop and anything else that might fit in just because they can. From 3 minute Punk explosions to 10 minute brooding Prog epics about the Roman Army it seems they have nothing and everything in their battle plan all at once, except Rap.

With 3 Vocalists, 2 Guitars, more Keyboards than you can wave a stick at, Bass, Drums, Samplers and a little piece of Soviet technology known simply as a Theremin (Stalin used one); there is a lot of noise going on, yet all coherent and engaging; its a big sound indeed. Miss this and miss out!

Waxed AppleSat 26 August Waxed Apple plus DJ

So what is all the fuss about Waxed Apple!? What is it about this West Country Electronica band that is getting them chosen to play on stages from Glastonbury to Hong Kong, and picked to open for bands like LCD Soundsystem, Prefuse 73 and Ozomatli? They give us something NEW!!!

Expect to see typical Live Formulas get ripped apart. Their exciting and unconventional use of strings, percussion, live samples, heavy beats and soulful vocals evade media pigeonholes. The big bass, mad electronics, violin and cello make for the distinctive sound that is Waxed Apple. It has been described as combining the riotous energy of the Prodigy, with the groove of Daft Punk, and the depth of Death in Vegas.

Originally all from the West Country, the band met whilst working in a recording studio in Brighton 3 years ago. As well as whipping up a storm throughout their adopted hometown, recent gigs have included the Post-Garage, Austria, The Rockit Festival in Hong Kong, Guilfest, Glastonbury, the Beautiful Days Festival, headlining at Cargo (London), supporting Ozomatli, LCD Soundsystem, Gold Chains and Prefuse 73. Checkout www.myspace.com/waxedapple. If you want a dance then this is your night!!!

Curragh SonsFri 1 Sep The Curragh Sons

The boys have taken their brand of high energy, in your face, Irish music all over the UK and Ireland in the last few years to much acclaim. Powerful three-part harmonies are backed by intricate and exuberant fiddle playing, wrist wracking triplets on the bodhan, innovative, no-holds-barred guitar and stonking bass lines! (not to mention some of the most impressive Guinness drinking this side of Dublin!).

She cites her main influences as Fairuz, Arif Sag, Kzrmak, Sirwan Pervez, Xharis Alexiou, Buffy Saint Maire and Emmy Lou Harris.

She composes original material in English and Turkish, incorporating elements of Turkish & Kurdish traditional music. Darren PoyzerSat 16 Sep - Darren Poyzer
+ Special Guests
+ Acoustic Music Chill Zone (Free)

Since moving out of Glossop just over a year ago to cast off spiritually into deepest rural Cheshire, Glossop's most travelled acoustic songwriter returns with new heart and voice.

Tonight Darren plays prior to setting out to Italy where he has been personally invited by Chris Difford of Squeeze to join an international songwriters masterclass, in residence for 7 days in a hilltop villa at Monestevole on the outskirts of Perugia.

2006 has once again seen Darren take on a number of prestigeous shows and blaze a trail of audiences taken in by his charm and passion. Five UK tour shows with US bluegrass band Hayseed Dixie, five shows with legendary rock band Wishbone Ash, two with poet John Cooper Clarke and most recently a storming Manchester occasion with The Alarm, have all kept him at the top of his game.

"Darren's songs are heartfelt with poignant lyrics, and a beautiful sensitive touch. We really enjoy it when he appears on the same stage as us." - Andy Powell, Wishbone Ash

Whilst the much awaited 'Bloody Love Songs' album awaits a release, a number of songs from this forthcoming album are now firmly placed within the live set. In addition, timeless classics and Poyzer faves are played with as much vigour as always, these days with more than ample backing from outstanding support musicians and special guests.

Fayze 2Sat 23 Sep Spargo & Fayze2 £5

MX Newspaper Melbourne, Vanessa Santer, 2nd February 2006: 'Lachlan Bryan has set a high standard for his Melbourne band Spargo. Bryan, 24, hopes to emulate the lyrics of John Lennon, Nick Cave and Bob Geldof. "Lyrics are the most important things for all of us. If we weren't confident in what out songs were saying we wouldn't want to get up on stage," he said. "For a lot of people, being in a band is about getting up and showing off but if you have nothing to say it's no good going up and making a dickhead of yourself."

Bryan, who is studying philosophy at uni, knows there's a lot more life wisdom to gain before he's on par with Lennon."You listen to so much of other people's wisdom. But for the stage we're at, (ours) are good songs and enjoyable," he said. But the band is making an impact.'

Fayze2 ... ok, lets start at the beginning. Joe and James Fay began singing and playing guitar together shortly after having their umbilical cords snipped. Their natural abilities and unshakable faith in each others talents were soon transposed into the world of songwriting. Yet it became apparent that if they were to achieve their dreams and aspirations, it was imperative for them to begin writing and performing as a band. Hand picking the finest fruits from the musical orchard that surrounded them, they joined forces with the rhythm section of Dave Brodie (bass) and Tom Western (drums). From here Fayze 2 have been on an unstoppable ascendency utilising their blend of musical genresin amalgamation with musical virtuosity, on stage energy and songwriting sensibilities. Recently, the band have played prestigious gigs at venues such as Manchester Academy, and finished 2nd in a battle of the bands event featuring almost every unsigned band in Liverpool. A new record is on the way to completion so make sure you keep your eyes and ears peeled for Fayze 2!
